Smart and Sustainable Investment Grant

This Grant is offered through the Malta Enterprise.

Objective

  • Encourage businesses to adopt sustainable and digital practices to enhance competitiveness and reduce environmental impact.

  • Support projects reducing carbon emissions and optimizing resource usage.

Key Features

Budget:Annual budget of €2 million.

Maximum Support:Covers 50% of eligible costs, capped at €100,000 per project. Additional tax credit of up to €40,000 for projects meeting specific criteria:Located in Gozo. Implemented by a start-up (<3 years old). Supported by an energy audit. Achieving 50%+ carbon emission savings.

Eligible Entities:

Companies, partnerships, or self-employed individuals operating in Malta. Must have at least one full-time employee and operate from commercial property. Projects must exceed €10,000 in cost.

Eligible Investments

Focus Areas:

Waste Minimization: Reducing material usage and packaging. Sustainable Materials: Switching to eco-friendly materials. Energy Efficiency: Upgrading machinery, lighting, and insulation. Water Efficiency: Installing closed-cycle systems and recycling solutions. Sustainable Digitization: Using IoT, building management systems, or other digital tools to improve environmental performance.

Conditions:

Projects must show a 10%+ reduction in CO2 emissions. Supported investments must be maintained for at least 3 years.

Exclusions

  • Routine maintenance, software licenses, SaaS solutions, and costs incurred before approval are ineligible.

  • Projects replacing end-of-life equipment are excluded.

Application Process

Requirements:Provide a technical analysis (e.g., carbon footprint report) and an investment plan. Submission:Apply via Malta Enterprise’s portal before 30 November 2026. Approval:Applicants receive a Letter of Approval specifying terms and conditions. Projects are monitored to ensure compliance.

State Aid Compliance

  • Aid falls under the de minimis rule: Total aid cannot exceed €300,000 over 3 years.
