Innovation Aid for SMEs Scheme

This Grant is offered through the Malta Enterprise.

Purpose

• Encourage SMEs to collaborate with research organizations and engage highly qualified personnel for innovation projects.

• Focus: Development of new/improved products, services, processes, or increased sustainability of existing offerings.

Eligibility

Applicants:

SMEs registered in Malta. Businesses established for less than 5 years or employing fewer than 5 full-time employees must submit a business plan.

Ineligibility:

Public entities, research organizations, or undertakings with outstanding recovery orders from previous aid. Businesses engaged in activities excluded by State Aid regulations.

Funding Details

• Maximum Support:Up to 50% of eligible costs, capped at €250,000. For innovation advisory/support services, support may reach 100%, capped at €220,000 per 3-year period.

• Eligible Costs:Secondment of highly qualified personnel from research organizations. Innovation advisory services (consultancy, training, or technical support). Support services (e.g., data storage, testing, certification).

Application Process

Preparation:Engage a Research and Knowledge-Dissemination Organization to outline project support. Submit a detailed application with a budget and agreement on project terms.

Submission Deadline:Applications accepted until 30 October 2026.

Post-Application Process

• Evaluation:Assessed on commercial, financial, and environmental feasibility, and potential for business growth.

• Approval:Successful applicants receive a Letter of Approval detailing terms and support value.

• Reporting:Annual and final reports are required to monitor project progress.
